In 1946 the Virginian Railway took delivery of five 2-8-4s from Lima Locomotive Works that were near duplicates of the Chesapeake & Ohio's class K-4 "Kanawhas" the builder was erecting during the same period. They weighed 460,400 pounds and produced a tractive effort of 69,368 pounds. Cylinder dimensions were 26x34 inches, boiler pressure was 245 p.s.i., and driver diameter was 69 inches. Their grate area measured slightly more than 90 square feet, and as to steaming capacity they had 4776 square feet of evaporative heating surface and 1932 square feet of superheater surface. They were therefore capable of much greater speed than normally required on the mostly coal-hauling Virginian. No 505, shown here at Norfolk on September 29, 1948, is said to have achieved 87 miles per hour when making a detour move over neighboring Norfolk & Western trackage. Members of this class were on the Virginian roster till 1960. The photo, from the collection of Ralph H. Payne of Cincinnati, Ohio, came to our Random Steam Collection by way of an eBay purchase.
