In 1916 Baldwin Locomotive Works delivered a second order of 30 2-10-2s to the St. Louis-San Francisco (known as the "Frisco"), numbered 21-40. These locomotives, eventually totaling 60 in number, were known as class 1 after the first engine of the group of 60. No. 22 appears here in April, 1938 at an unspecified location, likely St. Louis or Springfield, Missouri. These 2-10-2s had 29x30-inch cylinders, a 60-inch driver diameter, and a boiler pressure of 200 p.s.i. They produced 71,485 pounds of tractive force and weighed 380,000 pounds. Their grate area was slightly more than 76 square feet, and they had 5125 square feet of evaporative heating surface and 1233 square feet of superheater surface. Beginning in 1936 the Frisco began to build new 4-8-2s using parts from most of these these 2-10-2s. The image, probaby captured by Allen R. Johnson, comes to our Random Steam Collection courtesy of Donna Harrison-Rodeghiero. However, the same view appears in the Railfan.net ABPR Archive, uploaded by Bud Laws, and in the Springfield, Missouri Library's collection of Frisco steam locomotive photos.
