NC&StL "stripe" 4-8-4 No. 585 poses on a turntable, fresh from delivery by American Locomotive Company in 1942 or 1943. With a grate area of 77 square feet, these J-3 "Dixies" had 4200 square feet of evaporative heating surface and 1780 square feet of superheating surface; for their other specifications, see the page for "yellow jacket" No. 570.
