In 1922 the NC&StL turned to Baldwin Locomotive Works for its second order of 4-8-2s, the five locomotives in class J-1b and J-1c. Their dimensions were similar to those of the J-1a class except that they weighed 340,000 pounds, and had a slightly reduced evaporative heating surfase at 4039 square feet compensated by a greater superheating surface at 1080 square feet. The small Vanderbilt tenders of these NC&StL 4-8-2s was necessitated by turntable length limitations on a railroad which, until the arrival of these Mountain types, had relied on smaller power. R. H. Kennedy snapped No. 558 at Memphis, Tennessee on August 1, 1948; the photo, from the William A. Raia collection, was acquired form a eBay seller. No. 558 was to meet the salvager's torch late in 1950.
