IC 2-10-2 No. 2817 appears at Bluford, Illinois on June 3, 1956 in a photo by R. J. Foster from the C. T. Felstead Collection. The former No. 2926 built in 1921 by Lima, this locomotive was one of 20 rebuilt into the 2800 series beginning in in 1943, being among the last three to emerge from the Paducah Shops in 1945. As rebuilt these engines had cylinder dimensions of 30x32 inches, 64½-inch drivers, and a boiler pressure of 275 p.s.i. They weighed 416,000 pounds and, with a hefty tractive effort of 104,322 pounds, were the most powerful engines on the IC roster. When built in 1921 they had 80 square feet of grate area, 4677 square feet of evaporative heating surface, and 1162 square feet of superheating surface. No. 2817 went to the scrapyard in 1959. The photo came to our Random Steam Collection through an eBay purchase.
