Grand Trunk Western 2-8-2 No. 4070 was a member of class S-3-a, built by American Locomotive Company in Schenectady to USRA light Mikado specifications given for the representatives of the S-3 class described above. This engine, originally numbered 3734, assumed her current number in the GTW's June 1956 renumbering to make room for new diesels. She may have been the last steam locomotive to haul freight on the GTW. After receiving a larger tender, No. 4070 served as the motive power for railfan specials in the 1960s and 1970s. This image, provided by Tac Foley, was captured by A. B. Crompton at Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania, on August 19, 1972. No. 4070 was later acquired by the Midwest Railway Preservation Society for use on its Cuyahoga Valley Line. Out of service since 1990, she is undergoing a long-term restoration to operable status in Cleveland. A view of this locomotive in her role as No. 3734 appears on the GTW page in our Steam Locomotive Archive.
