The first locomotive of the Grand Trunk Western's S-3-c class of ten Mikados outshopped by ALCo in 1924, No. 3748 poses at Detroit's Milwaukee Junction terminal. Class S-3 had a grate area of 67 square feet; their evaporative heating surface totaled 3785 square feet and their superheating surface 882 square feet. No. 3748 was renumbered in June, 1956 to 4083 to make way for a new diesel, but the renumbering had not yet been applied when my brother took this photo on September 2, 1958, and may never have been applied before the engine was scrapped. Although passenger service was a duty rarely assigned to 2-8-2s in North America, some of these GTW class S-3 "Mikes" spent their final years hauling Detroit commuter trains.
