Prolific steam photographer Robert Graham captured this photo of Great Northern 2-8-2 No. 3254 taking on water at an undisclosed date and location. The image came from the collection of William Raia and was acquired for this site from an eBay seller. Locomotives of the O-4 class of 45 members were erected by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1920. These powerful Mikados, which featured the characteristic GN Belpaire firebox, weighed 315,360 pounds minus tender and pulled with 71,083 pounds of tractive effort. Their evaporative heating surface totaled 4714 square feet, their superheating surface 1018 square feet, and their grate area 78 square feet. They had 63-inch drivers, raised 210 p.s.i. of boiler pressure, and had 28x32-inch cylinders. No. 3254 was one of the few members of the group that was never converted to burn oil. By the late 1950s all members of the class had been retired, with some held in reserve until final scrapping in 1962.
