In 1937 the Green Bay & Western turned to American Locomotive Company for three 2-8-2s to handle its bridge traffic between Lake Michigan ferry docks and western locations, replacing lighter power. The new Mikados of the D-47 class, which had to be lighter than typical 2-8-2s due to weight restrictions on the GB&W's route through central Wisconsin, tipped the scales at 280,000 pounds. With 64-inch drivers and 245 p.s.i of boiler pressure, they had cylinder dimensions of 22x30 inches and exerted 47,285 pounds of tractive force. Evaporative heating surface totaled 2745 square feet, superheating surface 872 square feet, and grate area 60.4 square feet.
