American Locomotive Company delivered the Florida East Coast's class 801 4-8-2s in 1926, the last steam locomotives purchased by the railroad. No. 822 of the class poses for photographer Joe Schultz at Jacksonville in April 1941. Based on the USRA heavy Mountain design, the 801 class had cylinder dimensions of 28x30 inches, 210 p.s.i. of boiler pressure, and 69-inch drivers. They weighed 356,000 pounds and produced 60,845 pounds of tractive effort. Their grate area totaled 75 square feet, and they had an evaporative heating surface of 5014 square feet plus 1477 square feet of superheater surface. These 4-8-2s served the FEC into the 1950s, but all those remaining in 1954 were consigned to the torch by the end of that year. This image came to our collection via an eBay purchase.
