2-8-4 No. 3384 was the last locomotive in the Erie's third order for Berkshires, the S-3 class delivered by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1928. While differing in some dimensions, all the Erie Berkshires had a grate area of 100 square feet, around 5690 square feet of evaporative heating surface, and 2480 square feet of superheater surface. The S-3 class weighed 461,000 pounds. The above photo comes to us from a print of unknown provenance in the collection of Wayne Koch, although the image also appears from another collection in George Elwood's Fallen Flags site. Sadly, none of these significant Erie high-speed Berkshires were spared the torch, all being retired by the end of 1952.
