In 1948 the DM&IR acquired four Mikados from its sister United States Steel railroad, the dieselizing Elgin, Joliet & Eastern; No. 1324 had been the EJ&E's No. 758. Classed as N-5 by the DM&IR, these engines were a Lima Locomotive Works product of 1923. They had 63-inch drivers, a boiler pressure of 185 p.s.i., and cylinder dimensions of 28x30 inches. Their grate area measured 57 square feet, and they had 4143 square feet of evaporative heating surface and 1091 square feet of superheating surface. They weighed 333,000 pounds and mustered a tractive force of 58,707 pounds. No. 1324 of the class is shown here at Virginia, Minnesota in May 1955, in an image purchased through eBay.
