Ore-hauler DM&IR predecessor Duluth & Iron Range did not have extensive passenger operations, but in 1913 it needed more power for what it did offer and turned to Baldwin Locomotive Works for four Pacifics of class A. These engines had cylinder dimensions of 22x28 inches, carried 200 p.s.i. of boiler pressure, and rolled on 69-inch drivers. Weighing 223,900 pounds, they produced 33,389 pounds of tractive effort. They had 2716 square feet of evaporative heating surface, 610 square feet of superheating surface, and 48 square feet of grate area. Ralph H. Payne of Cincinnati snapped DM&IR No. 1109, formerly D&IR 109, at Duluth on September 16, 1951; the image came to our collection through an eBay seller.
