My father, Dr. R. D. Leonard, was Professor of History at Illinois Wesleyan University and, in retirement, became founding president of the Central Illinois Railroad Club. In the summer of 1975 he snapped this transparency of Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 No. 1278 and a sister engine, probably on a club fan trip over the Toledo, Peoria & Western Railroad. For another color image of No. 1278 and further commentary on its 1995 explosion, see the Canadian Pacific page in our Steam Locomotive Archive.
