Chicago & North Western 4-6-4 No. 4002 was chosen for the 1938 American Locomotive Company builder's photo. With 84-inch drivers, a boiler pressure of 300 p.s.i. and cylinder dimensions of 25x29 inches, these 412,000-pound Hudsons exerted 55,000 pounds of tractive effort. Their grate area totaled 91 square feet, and they boasted 3960 square feet of evaporative heating surface together with 1885 square feet of superheater surface. In 1947-48 they were converted to burn oil, and spent their final days in Chicago suburban service. No. 4002 was retired in 1953, and by 1956 all members of the class had been sent to the scrapper.
