The Burlington Route (Chicago, Burlington & Quincy) was one of several railroads that ran steam excursions out of Chicago during the 1950s. This excellent transparency of No. 3003 by Robert Leffingwell must have been taken during one of these fan trips, judging by the presence of an enthusiast in the right foreground and others in the door of the baggage car behind the tender. Today No. 3003 is preserved in Burlington, Iowa. For the dimensions of the S-4 class of 4-6-4s, see the commentary on No. 3007.
