From the collection of William D. Volkmer comes this photo of Boston & Maine class P-2 Pacific No. 3628 looking freshly shopped and painted. After the P-2s had been in service for a number of years the B&M applied feedwater heaters, either the Elesco bundle-type (as shown on this example and on Nos. 3622, 3659 and 3665) or the Worthington type 3BL. In this view we get a good look at the "indirect" or "reversed" Walschaerts valve gear configuration that was applied to these engines, with the eccentric crank angled behind the center of the main driver.
