Santa Fe 2-8-4 No. 4198 was acquired from the Boston & Maine in 1945, where it had been that railroad's No. 4015. Although converted to burn oil, this locomotive did not receive the extensive rebuilding of No. 4197. As built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1928 for the B&M, these 2-8-4s had 63-inch drivers which were retained by the AT&SF. (Other dimensions of the B&M 2-8-4s are discussed in the commentary for those engines.) By 1954 all members of the Santa Fe group had been scrapped. Location, date, and photographer of this view of No. 4198 are unspecified, but the image comes from the collection of Carl Weber.
