This view of class U-3b 0-8-0 No. 7641 was snapped at Jackson, Michigan in the early 1950s by W. C. Hommerding, and came to our NYC Collection via Wayne Koch. All members of class U-3, which numbered 417 locomotives throughout the New York Central System in 1940, had 51-inch drivers and 25x28-inch cylinders, giving them good leverage when digging into their yard duties. They carried a boiler pressure of 175 p.s.i., developed 51,200 pounds of tractive effort, and weighed in at 219,500 pounds. Other specification for the U-3 class appear on the page for No. 7643. No. 7641, formerly numbered 241, was retired in 1955.
