Ed Nowak was the official photographer for the New York Central during the 1940s and 1950s and the creator of this September, 1953 postcard view of J-3a 4-6-4 No. 5433 at the engine terminal in Harmon, New York. NYC steam operations east of Buffalo had ended the previous month, but No. 5433 had been cosmetically prepared for a display during the 350th anniversary celebration of New York City and was not under steam. No. 5433 went on to operate on the western parts of the New York Central System and was not retired until early in 1956. The image reveals some of the later modifications to the J-3 class, though not the 14-wheel PT tender ("passenger tender") applied to many Hudsons; I acquired the postcard through eBay.
