The 2250-horsepower Electro-Motive E-8 was the New York Central's most advanced passenger cab unit, entrusted with the premier varnish such as the Twentieth Century Limited and the New England States. Here, however, we see E-8 No. 4053 heading what appears to be an outbound Boston commuter local. This photo was taken in September 1960, during my very first days as a student at Boston University School of Theology. The nearby St. Mary's Street overpass afforded a good view of the four-track Boston & Albany main line into South Station. In 1961 No. 4053 was one of three E-8 units painted jade green (called "Century Green") in an experimental NYC livery that was not adopted.
