The Alton Route's P-14 class of 4-6-2s numbered three locomotives in 1940, including No. 5276 shown here at Springfield in a Walter A. Peters photo. (Two members of the class had been retired in 1938.) A 1909 product of American Locomotive Company's Brooks Works, these engines were originally the Chicago & Alton's class I-5, numbered 620-624. With 80-inch drivers and 23x28-inch cylinders, they had a boiler pressure of 200 pounds per square inch. They developed 31,600 pounds of tractive force and weighed 224,000 pounds. This photo comes from the Gary Thompson collection.
