Santa Fe 31C, an EMD F3A built in 1948, heads an A-B-B-B-A consist at Streator, Illinois, in August 1961. Midday shadows suggest this is the westbound Grand Canyon. In 1971 the unit was rebuilt to a CF7 and renumbered 2636. It was retired in 1987 and sold to National Railway Equipment; it operated as Washington Central 402, then as BNSF 402 after 1996. Subsequently it was leased to Nebraska, Kansas & Colorado as No. 3 and operated on the Illinois Railnet (now Illinois Railway) till 2009, but reportedly its lease has expired.
