The Chesapeake & Ohio displayed one of its new steam turbine electric locomotives at both the 1948 and 1949 fairs, and they operated in the "Wheels-a-Rolling" pageant. Here we see No. 500 as captured on a transparency by Roderick Arthur O'Connor. Ironically, these turbines were withdrawn from service shortly after the Fair came to an end, and were scrapped the following year. The combination of steam and electric components was complex, and the units were unreliable and frequently in the shop for repairs.
