Southern Pacific 4-8-4 No. 4459 was one of only two members of the GS-5 class delivered in 1942 by the Lima Locomotive Works. In specifications they differed little from the GS-4 class of 1941, the main variation being a greater locomotive weight of 483,200 pounds and a slightly reduced amount of superheating surface at 1834 square feet. Additionally, they were equipped with Timken roller bearings. This image by Robert A. Trennert of Bell, California, was featured on a postcard acquired from an antique shop. Location and date are not specified, but the image was captured after the locomotive's orange "Daylight" skirting had been removed. No. 4459 was scrapped in 1956.
