Nickel Plate 2-8-4 No. 758 leads a double-header with No. 754 through Fostoria, Ohio. This postcard view, courtesy of Gary Thompson, comes from 1958, near the end of steam on the NKP. The photographer is unknown. These Berkshires belonged to the NKP's S-2 class, which rolled off the erecting floor of Lima Locomotive Works in 1944. With 69-inch drivers, they had cylinder dimensions of 25x34 inches and carried a boiler pressure of 245 pounds per square inch. The locomotive alone weighed 440,800 pounds, and they developed 64,135 pounds of tractive effort. With 90 square feet of grate area, 4770 square feet of evaporative heating surface and 1930 square feet of superheater service, these Berkshires were capable of moving heavy freight over the Midwestern plains at a respectable speed. It is likely, then, that the reason for double-heading was not primarily a requirement for more power but the need to return one of the locomotives to a western terminal due to a traffic imbalance.
