The Illinois Central's 0-8-2 No. 3693 was 2-8-2 No. 1585 until its Paducah Shops rebuilding in 1942. This class as rebuilt had 28x30-inch cylinders, 62-inch drivers, and a boiler pressure of 225 p.s.i. With these specifications their tractive effort would have been 72,551 pounds, well suited for shoving large cuts of cars through yard trackage. In addition, their weight was increased from 282,700 to 294,000 pounds for greater adhesion. The slope-sided tender gave the enginemen a better view to the rear for switching. We see No. 3693 at Bluford, Illinois on June 16, 1949, in a view by an unspecified photographer from the collection of Richard Tanzella. This engine was retired in 1955.
