2-8-2 No. 3524 was the lone member of the Grand Trunk Western's class S-1-h to escape having its pilot truck amputated and becoming an 0-8-2 switcher. Here she is in charge of a freight train on the GTW's main line near Lansing, Michigan, about to meet 4-8-4 No. 6409 with her limited. The Mikado was built in 1918 by ALCo's Schenectady Works. She had 27x30-inch cylinders, 63-inch drivers, and a boiler pressure of 175 p.s.i. This engine pulled with 51,637 pounds of tractive effort and weighed 284,800 pounds. The presence of No. 3524 on a main line freight seems unusual; normally a 4-8-4 powered these trains, and if a 2-8-2 was pressed into this service it was more likely to be one of the S-3 class Mikes. Jerry A. Tyler supplied this view, apparently shot from a highway overpass, from the collection of Frank Anthony.
