The heaviest Pacific type locomotives built were the three class E-3 4-6-2s that ALCo delivered in 1930 to the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha (the "Omaha Road"), a component of the Chicago & North Western system. Tipping the scale at 347,000 pounds, they produced 51,567 pounds of tractive effort. With 75-inch drivers, they had 25x28-inch cylinders and a boiler pressure of 260 p.s.i. Evaporative heating surface was 4293 square feet and superheating surface 2040 square feet, while the grate area exceeded 70 square feet. Reportedly these locomotives were equipped with Timken roller bearings on all axles. Although the "Omaha Road" E-3 Pacifics served mainly between the Twin Cities and Omaha, No. 602 poses here at Milwaukee on July 2, 1939 in an image credited to Theodore A. Gay of Brooklyn, New York.
