Among the last steam locomotives erected for the Canadian Pacific Railway were the class G3j 4-6-2s, 1948 products of Montreal Locomotive Works. A modernization of an older, tried-and-true design, these Pacifics had 22x30-inch cylinders, a boiler pressure of 275 ponds per square inch, and a driving wheel diameter of 75 inches. They had a grate area of 65 square feet, an evaporative heating surface of 3176 square feet, and a superheater surface of 1475 square feet. Weighing 294,000 pounds, they developed 45,200 pounds of tractive force. Here, No. 2471 of class G3j is being turned and serviced at the terminal in Windsor, Ontario. The date and photographer's identity are not available, but this photo comes to our Random Steam Collection from Tom Rock of T.D.R. Productions in Cleveland, Tennessee.
