The Mikado or 2-8-2 type was the mainstay of freight service on the sprawling lines of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy. No. 5090 of class O-1A poses at Savanna, Illinois in 1958 in this late-steam post card photo taken by Russ Porter and published by Audio-Visual Designs of Earlton, New York. Members of class O-1A were constructed over a five-year period beginning in 1917. Developing 58,000 pounds of tractive force, these Mikados weighed 282,000 pounds. They rolled on 64-inch drivers, carried 200 pounds of boiler pressure and had cylinder dimensions of 27x30 inches. Their grate area totaled 59 square feet, and they had an evaporative heating surface of 3410 square feet and a superheater surface of 770 square feet. Despite their modest dimensions, these veteran Mikes were among the last steam engines to be operated by the Burlington Route.
