The Cincinnati area was the last holdout for steam power on the New York Central system, so this rare color photo of 0-8-0 switch engine, No. 7796 backing toward its next assignment (note that the reach rod has pulled the Baker valve gear yoke into reverse position) was likely taken at Riverside Yard there. A member of class U-3c, No. 7796 came from American Locomotive Company's Schenectady Works in 1922 as No. 396, with dimensions identical to those for Nos. 7641 and 7643 described previously. Although the last steam run on the NYC is reported to have occurred in 1957 (see the commentary for 2-8-2 No. 1977, previously), sources indicate that No. 7796 was not retired till 1959.
