No specific information is available regarding the provenance of this photograph of NYC class J-1e Hudson No. 5341. However the "Century Gothic" lettering, specially designed for the New York Central, indicates a date after 1940. No. 5341 was retired in 1953 and sold for scrap the following year. The original Hudson, No. 5200, and other members of the J-1a class came from the American Locomotive Company with the Walschaerts valve gear, but they were all subsequently retrofitted with the Baker gear and succeeding classes were built with that type of valve motion, as shown here.
