The 2250-horsepower Electro-Motive E8 was the New York Central's most advanced passenger cab unit, entrusted with the premier varnish such as the Twentieth Century Limited and the New England States. Here, however, we see E8 No. 4053 heading what appears to be an outbound Boston commuter local. This photo was taken in September 1960, during my very first days as a student at Boston University School of Theology. The nearby St. Mary's Street overpass afforded a good view of the four-track Boston & Albany main line into South Station. In 1961 No. 4053 was one of three E units painted jade green in an experimental NYC livery which was not adopted.
