A New York Central roster published in 1940 lists 300 engines in class L2 erected in 1925-1930. No. 2927, a representative of class L2d, was a 1929 product of the American Locomotive Company. These locomotives had 25½x30-inch cylinders and 69-inch drivers, and carried a boiler pressure of 225 pounds per square inch. With a locomotive weight of around 370,000 pounds, they produced 60,150 pounds of tractive force to which a booster added another 12,400 pounds.
