Shown here is 2-8-2 No. 1646, a representative of class H5o, while still operating as No. 6719 of the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis (the "Big Four") before the 1936 renumbering. This class was delivered by Alco in 1914-15 and weighed 280,000 pounds. They had 63-inch drivers and cylinder dimensions of 25x32 inches. Sustaining a boiler pressure of 180 pounds per square inch, they produced 48,570 pounds of tractive force. According to my 1940 NYC roster, a booster added 9,900 pounds of tractive force. This photo was taken by Robert Graham of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Viewer Ted Tobin writes to say the location is probably Wabash, Indiana, on the former "Big Four" Michigan branch. His clue is the "whirly bird" crane used to resupply the tender with coal, which he often saw there as a boy.
