The northbound Alton Limited gets the window washer treatment during a Bloomington stop in August 1957. At a running speed of 90 miles per hour, the windshield must have accumulated a good sampling of the Illinois insect population during its run from St. Louis. The lead EMD E7 unit No. 100 is trailed by No. 100A, the Alton Route's lone EA unit which the GM&O had EMD rebuild into an E8 in 1953. It was wrecked in 1971. For a view of that unit in its original EA slant-nosed configuration, see Paul F. Doering's scan from an Alton Route publicity photo on the North East Rails early diesel page.
