Little is known about this Chicago & Alton 4-6-0 or Ten-Wheeler type locomotive, shown here in a photo from Gary Thompson's collection. It was probably a member of the Chicago & Alton's G-2 class, erected before 1900. The C&A's earlier 4-6-0 classes had 64-inch drivers and carried 175 pounds per square inch of boiler pressure. If this engine belonged to class G-2 its cylinder dimensions were 18x24 inches. By 1940 all Ten-Wheelers were off the Alton Route roster. Photographer, date and location are unknown, although the old headlight (perhaps not electric) points to a time no later than the early 1900s.
